Hello to the NDA group

We’re sustainably, safely and securely decommissioning the UK’s earliest nuclear facilities and preparing them for their next use

Our work ranges from reducing hazards at nuclear sites, to delivering a permanent Geological Disposal Facility for radioactive waste and transporting nuclear materials globally.

We also have a unique role supporting delivery of the Government’s sustainability ambitions and investing in social impact programmes to support the communities around our sites.

A mission that makes a difference

The UK is a pioneer of nuclear power, with electricity generated for homes and businesses since the 1950s. Our 17 sites are part of this legacy and include the first fleet of nuclear power stations as well as research sites, fuel-related plants and waste handling and disposal facilities.

When the sites were built, no plans were developed for how they’d be decommissioned, unlike the arrangements in place for sites today. It’s a long-term challenge, stretching into the next century, that we’re delivering with sustainability in mind and significant investments in the areas of skills development and research, technology and innovation.

Our staff, supply chain, academic partners and global experts are working together to develop innovative approaches and deliver our work safely, securely and cost effectively. World-leading skills are required from apprentices, graduates and PhD students to experienced professionals. The work we’re doing is extraordinary and, for our people, it means there are so many possibilities in a wide range of technical, operational and business disciplines.

Sustainability

Our work is highly complex and we’re working hard to meet the demands of some of the most technically challenging projects in the world. But decommissioning is about much more than waste management, demolition and other physical work.

How we go about our work is very important to us and we must deliver results safely, responsibly, and sustainably. Our commitment to creating environmental and social benefits builds on our long history of providing value for the UK and we want to ensure that our actions and decisions continue to have a lasting, positive impact.

Our decommissioning journey

Our Mission Progress Report captures and describes all the work required to deliver our mission within five themes and 47 strategic outcomes. The first four themes relate directly to our decommissioning work, while critical enablers describes all of the important activities required to make us operate safely and compliantly while making a difference.  Find out more about recent progress:

Hello to the NDA group companies

Our work is complex and relies on the full range of expertise and skills held by our 17,000 colleagues in all parts of the NDA group.

Nuclear Decommissioning Authority

We’re sponsored and funded by the UK Government’s Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).

As owners of one of the largest nuclear decommissioning and remediation programmes in Europe, our main priority is to develop the strategy for how work should be carried out across the NDA group

Sellafield Ltd

Sellafield led the development of the UK nuclear industry. It has the largest inventory of untreated nuclear waste in the world and has the challenge of decommissioning the legacy of the site’s early operations, including some of the most hazardous nuclear facilities in Europe.

Nuclear Restoration Services

Nuclear Restoration Services is responsible for 13 former nuclear power stations and research sites in many parts of England, Scotland and Wales that are now being decommissioned.

Nuclear Waste Services

Nuclear Waste Services operates the Low Level Waste Repository site, leads the search for a suitable site and willing community to host a Geological Disposal Facility and oversees our group-wide Integrated Waste Management Programme.

Nuclear Transport Solutions

Nuclear Transport Solutions is a leading global provider of safe, secure and reliable nuclear transport solutions.

The NDA group also includes NDA Archives Ltd, NDA Properties Ltd, Rutherford Indemnity Ltd and Energus.
